Lucas Torreira sends message to Thomas Partey after he took his Arsenal place

Lucas Torreira and Thomas Partey traded roles between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid on a frantic deadline day.

Partey has left Atletico Madrid for north London after the Gunners activated his release clause on the final day of the transfer window.

Uruguayan midfielder Torreira has headed in the opposite direction to link up with Diego Simeone after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta.

Torreira has now addressed his last-gasp move after heading to Uruguay for international duty.

And he has sent a message to Partey - wishing him well as he takes his spot in the Arsenal squad and telling him to expect a club that will treat him well.

Speaking to reporters at Carrasco International Airport, on the outskirts of Montevideo, Torreira wished Partey "the best" at Arsenal.

"There he is going to meet a club where they treated me very well and that is the most important thing," he said, via Mundo Deportivo.

Regarding his move to Atletico, he added: "I am happy. The truth is that after a bit of suffering because it happened at the last hours for the period of passes to end, but the important thing is that the signature was given.

"Today I am a new Atlético de Madrid player. I'm super happy."

The 24-year-old explained that he spent a long time "doing the medical examination, doing a lot of paperwork" and waiting for an agreement to be struck between Arsenal and Atletico.

"That took a long time, but as I said before, everything went very well and I was able to sign," he added.

Matteo Guendouzi also left Arsenal on deadline day, joining Hertha Berlin on loan.

But Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta outlined their confidence that Partey can make a major impact in midfield moving forwards.

"We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad," said Arteta.

"He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

"We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club."
