Lucas Torreira joins Atletico Madrid on loan as Arsenal complete £45m Thomas Partey transfer

Lucas Torreira has followed Matteo Guendouzi out of the Arsenal exit door on deadline day after completing a loan switch to Atletico Madrid.

The combative Uruguayan international will spend the rest of the 2020/21 season on loan in LaLiga, with fellow midfielder Guendouzi having joined German top-flight outfit Hertha Berlin earlier on Monday.

Confirmation of Torreira's move to Atletico came shortly before Arsenal announced the high-profile arrival of Rojiblancos midfielder Thomas Partey.

The Gunners have paid Partey's £45million release clause, with personal terms already agreed and the player passing a medical in Madrid before travelling to London.

That release clause left Atletico powerless to prevent the departure of the Ghanaian, with Diego Simeone having wanted to keep him in Madrid for another season.

He will hope Torreira can help fill the void left by Partey, who had been Mikel Arteta's top transfer target following deals for Gabriel, Willian and Runar Alex Runarsson.

Torreira joined Arsenal from Sampdoria following an impressive 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia and went on to make 89 appearances across all competitions.

However, he had become surplus to requirements under Arteta and hasn't played at all during the early stages of the campaign, last appearing in the 3-2 win over Watford on the final day of last term.
