Lucas Torreira becomes third Arsenal player to test positive for COVID-19

Lucas Torreira has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Arsenal midfielder, currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, underwent tests on Wednesday after returning to Spain following international duty with Uruguay.

And it was discovered that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

Worryingly, as reported by Sport Witness, the midfielder is the national team's 12th person among players and staff to receive a positive result. He also played for Uruguay on Wednesday night during their 2-0 loss to Brazil.

When the Uruguay FA reported seven new positive tests on Wednesday morning, Torreira hadn’t been included, so there’s now a chance that other players could have contracted the virus in the past few days.

Torreira must now following quarantine protocols which will see him miss up to two weeks of action, including this weekend's huge La Liga clash at home to Barcelona.

"Today, Lucas Torreira underwent PCR tests upon his arrival in Madrid after returning from the concentration with the Uruguayan team following the usual protocol when our internationals rejoin after their commitments with their country," a statement reads.

"The analysis of these samples has been positive for Covid-19.

"Our footballer has no symptoms and remains isolated at home complying with the corresponding quarantine following the protocols of the health authorities."

Torreira is also the third Arsenal player to have tested positive for coronavirus during the international break.

Mohamed Elneny miss the Premier League clash against Leeds United on Sunday afternoon after testing positive for Covid-19 whilst on international duty with Egypt.

A statement released by the Egyptian FA on Monday evening said Elneny was asymptomatic, but the midfielder would now need to self-isolate.

The same applies to Sead Kolasinac.

It was confirmed on Wednesday morning that the defender had tested positive for the virus, meaning he will miss Bosnia and Herzegovina's clash against Italy.

That, of course, means that he will also be absent for the trip to Elland Road, as well as the return game with Molde in the Europa League next week.
