DETROIT _ Kevan Smith hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center, and Lucas Giolito threw a one-run gem as the White Sox beat the Tigers, 6-1, at Comerica Park on Saturday.
Yoan Moncada, Matt Davidson, Ryan LaMarre and Jose Rondon also drove in runs.
Smith looked at two balls from Tigers starter Ryan Carpenter, then turned on his 89-mph fastball that sat dead-center in the zone and cranked it 406 feet. His exit velocity was 103 mph.
Who does this guy think he is, Daniel Palka?
Smith certainly isn't known for his power, but he gets on base. He has a .331 OBP and has hit safely in 26 of 33 games since he was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on June 5.
Meanwhile, Giolito (10-9) shined as well. He has looked like a different pitcher since getting rocked for seven runs against the Yankees earlier this month. He notched wins and limited damage to three runs in each of his last two outings, and was looking to keep building momentum.
Against the Tigers, he painted the corners and touched the edges of the zone.
Giolito gave up three hits _ one major mistake, which Mikie Mahtook capitalized for a solo homer _ and struck out six. Just as key, he lasted seven innings. The last time Giolito did that was another one-run, six-strikeout effort against the Rays on Aug. 3.
