CHICAGO _ The Detroit Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning Thursday against the Chicago White Sox.
Lucas Giolito was up for the test.
Giolito struck out Niko Goodrum swinging with an 82 mph changeup and fanned Christin Stewart swinging with a 95 mph fastball to get out of the jam.
Giolito matched a career high with 13 strikeouts in seven shutout innings as the Sox completed a four-game series sweep with a 9-0 victory at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Giolito allowed three hits and walked one as the Sox (15-11) won their fifth straight.
The Sox took advantage of Spencer Turnbull's wildness to score three runs in the first. Turnbull walked three in the inning.
Danny Mendick had an RBI double off Tyler Alexander in the third, and Tim Anderson hit a solo home run off Alexander in the fourth to make it 5-0.
Jose Abreu, who went 3-for-5, drove in two with a double off Joe Jimenez in the eighth. Eloy Jimenez followed with a two-run home run.
The Tigers' best scoring chance against Giolito came in the fourth. But Giolito escaped trouble and bounced back from a rough outing in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cardinals to improve to 2-2.
He reached double figures in strikeouts for the eighth time in his career. He previously had 13 strikeouts on Aug. 11, 2019, against the Oakland A's.
