To nobody’s surprise, Lucas Giolito was officially named an American League all-star Sunday.
He also won’t be the only White Sox player to take part in the festivities.
May’s AL pitcher of the month, Giolito was named to his first all-star team. Acquired from the Nationals in Dec. 2016 as part of the Adam Eaton trade, Giolito has blossomed into one of the game’s best pitchers.
After a disastrous 2018 when he compiled a 6.13 ERA and walked 90 batters, Giolito’s emerged in 2019, entering Sunday 10-2 with a 2.87 ERA.
Joining him July 9 in Cleveland will be catcher James McCann, who has been behind the plate for every pitch Giolito has thrown. McCann is having a career year offensively, entering Sunday with a .320 average and nine home runs, and that was good for his first all-star berth.
While the all-star game will be a new experience for Giolito and McCann, it will be the third trip to the event for Jose Abreu. Voted a starter last year, Abreu will be a reserve this year. He came into Sunday’s game hitting .262 with 19 homers and 60 runs driven in.
