Lucas Digne completes Everton exit with £25m Aston Villa move

Lucas Digne has completed his exit from Everton to join Aston Villa.

The left-back has joined Steven Gerrard's side for an officially undisclosed fee, which is believed to be £25m.

Digne quickly became a fan-favourite at Goodison Park following his £18m move from Barcelona in the summer of 2018, fitting straight into Marco Silva's side in place of Leighton Baines.

The defender's brand of attacking football and crosses into the box from that position became a staple of Everton's build-up play and led the France international to building a lot of influence in the following three years.

He continued to be a regular start under Carlo Ancelotti and through the early spell of Rafa Benitez's reign.

But more recently a dispute with the current Blues boss has seen the 28-year-old drop out of the side.

Digne leaves Everton having scored six goals across 127 appearances in all competitions during his three-and-a-half year spell on Merseyside, bagging 20 assists in that time.

And last night he sent a parting message to Evertonians.

He said: "Thank you, to all you wonderful, proud and passionate true Evertonians. It has been a an honour and a true pleasure to play for you, the fans, the people - because a club do not belong to a player or a manager, but to the fans. I will always carry you with me in my heart wherever I go.

"Sometimes it only takes one person from outside to destroy a beautiful love affair. All the best to Everton and Evertonians."

Villa boss Gerrard said: “When Lucas became available we jumped at the opportunity to bring him to the club.

“To sign a player of his pedigree and quality in the January window is a great addition to our squad and his arrival excites me and everyone associated with Aston Villa.”

Digne becomes Villa's second signing of the January transfer window after Gerrard brought in his former Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona.

Villa are scheduled to face Everton, at Goodison Park, on Saturday, January 12 (12.30pm KO), which will be broadcast live on BT Sport.
