Lucas Digne absence explained as Everton defender to miss Arsenal match

Lucas Digne  will miss today's game with Arsenal with a muscle strain.

The Everton left-back will be replaced by Leighton Baines in the starting line-up if, as expected, he misses out this afternoon at the Emirates.

Digne's injury is not thought to be serious and Everton expect that he will be fit to face Manchester United at Goodison a week today.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti said: "Digne had a problem during the week and tried to train yesterday but was not confident, so I preferred to leave him at home to train and be ready for the next game."

Andre Gomes, meanwhile, is in line to mark his return to competitive action after over three months out because of an ankle injury by starting today's game.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti wants to start the Portuguese midfielder but was set to hold discussions with him yesterday.

Theo Walcott was also a doubt to face his old club because of a knee problem.
