Gardai have identified the body found in a burnt out car in Lucan as missing convicted criminal Wayne Whelan.
Whelan, who previously survived a hit attempt in September, was shot dead before being left in the passenger seat of a burning car in Mount Andrew Estate on Monday.
It's believed the 42-year-old was lured to his death by someone he trusted before being shot from the rear of the Toyota Corolla.
The gun used in the attack was not left in the car and hasn't been recovered.
Whelan was known to gardai and his life had been under threat for a number of months.
He had been living in the Lucan area for the last 13 years and was known to wear bullet-proof vests and was rarely seen alone.
In September, he miraculously managed to scamper to safety 10 bullets were fired through his windscreen just around the corner from his home.
The scene of the shooting was just yards away from Griffeen Valley Park where Mark 'The Guinea Pig' Desmond was gunned down in 2016.
Whelan was a suspected in the Desmond probe and was also linked to the murder of David Chen Lynch who was shot dead outside his home in Foxdene, Clondalkin, last March.
Lynch and Whelan were former pals but it had been previously reported the pair fell out.
Today in Lucan Superintendent Paul Dolan launched an appeal for information, particularly surrounding the car which was bought on November 13th.

Supt Dolan said: "I am appealing for any person who has seen this car or knows of its whereabouts since the 13th November to contact investigating Gardaí.
“I am also appealing to any person in Mount Andrew Estate, who saw this car or to any person who witnessed or has dashcam footage in relation to the incident on Monday night 18th November 2019.
"To help assist people in their recollection, the Ireland v Denmark International Soccer match was taking place at the time."
The Corolla had the registration number 05 CW 2225.
