Luca Guadagnino to direct new Scarface film, and Al Pacino fans aren't happy about the remake

Luca Guadagnino has signed up to direct the new Scarface reboot, Variety reports.

The Call Me By Your Name filmmaker will helm a remake of the classic crime drama, with the Coen Brothers having signed up to write the script several years ago.

The new film will move the action from Miami to Los Angeles and be a “reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films.” Casting has yet to be announced.

There have been two major versions of Scarface – the 1932 movie produced by Howard Hughes, and the revered 1983 version starring Al Pacino and directed by Brian De Palma.

Guadagnino's involvement in Scarface is major news for movie fans, but not everyone is happy that a remake is happening at all – plenty have taken to social media to vent their frustrations, claiming that Al Pacino’s iconic performance cannot be replicated.

It’s the latest project announced for Guadagnino, who directed the Suspiria remake in 2018. The Italian filmmaker is also currently working on the HBO series We Are Who We Are and developing a remake of Lord of the Flies.
