LTA open up on plans for British Tour events after coronavirus disruption

Professional tennis will return in July with four British Tour events behind closed doors at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

And the LTA are hoping Andy and Jamie Murray and Jo Konta will take part to compete for top first prizes of £2,250.

Wimbledon has been cancelled for the first time since the Second World War and the WTA and ATP tours have been suspended until at least August.

Now, subject to confirmation of the Government, these new events will be open to the 32 top-ranked British players – 16 men and 16 women – and staged over three days between July 3-26.

Wimbledon should have been staged between June 29 and July 12 this year.

Total prize money in the two Premier-level events – to be held July 3-5 and 18-19 will total £16,000.

Scott Lloyd, LTA Chief Executive, said: “Since the coronavirus crisis, we have been working incredibly hard to support all our players, venues, coaches and officials through this very challenging time.

"I’m delighted to announce today the next stage of elite tennis’ return to competing safely behind closed doors as part of a five-phase plan coordinated by UK Sport with Government.

"The LTA is actively engaged in developing the necessary guidelines for behind closed doors events, which we hope will be determined by the Government in the coming weeks to ensure the safest environment for anyone involved in returning to competition and look forward to bringing tennis back into people’s lives this summer.”
