LSU, Oklahoma setbacks are among top 10 highlights of college football opening weekend

The jam-packed opening weekend of college football did not disappoint. Check out the top 10 things we learned during opening weekend:

1. Preseason rankings mean so little. A handful of ranked teams suffered the indignity of losing in the opening week, including a pair of monumental collapses by top-five teams in Oklahoma (3) and LSU (5).

2. Expect a lot of sky-is-falling hyperbole from college football fans this week. The radio air waves are sure to be filled with a lot of "woe is me" commentary after a rough weekend for some fan bases, especially in SEC territory after Mississippi State, Auburn, LSU and Kentucky suffered heartbreaking losses.

3. It's the same old song and dance for LSU. Les Miles survived a late season revolt as the Tigers stumbled a bit down the stretch, but optimism was high heading into this season. It all went out the window Saturday after another poor performance on the offensive side of the football.

4. Houston has work to do. If Houston is going to be in the Playoff discussion, the Cougars need to run the table. The talking heads will rush to automatically include Tom Herman's team in the College Football Playoff conversation, but this team still has some work to do and needs to go undefeated to earn an elite bowl bid.

5. Clemson survives Auburn without hurting title aspirations. Deshaun Watson and the Tigers looked a bit rusty in their 19-13 win over unranked Auburn, but Clemson was unflappable on the defensive side of the football. The unit held off two last-second Hail Mary attempts, a good first step during Clemson's push for a championship.

6. Alabama is going to be perfectly fine _ again. The Crimson Tide entered the season under a cloud of uncertainty as the team lacked a clear leader at quarterback. That changed quickly after freshman Jalen Hurts accounted for four touchdowns during a 52-6 rout of USC.

7. Is Washington the best of the Pac-12? The Huskies put together one of their most dominant performances _ albeit against Rutgers _ showcasing the conference's North Division thanks to teams like Washington, Stanford and Oregon.

8. Tennessee survives. The Volunteers came into their showdown with Appalachian State as three-touchdown favorites, but they didn't look the part. Butch Jones' team fumbled the ball four times and failed to score a touchdown until the fourth quarter. If not for a 17-point second-half swing, this team would own an 0-1 start for the first time since 2008.

9. Ohio State, Michigan boost the Big Ten. As opening statements go, the Big Ten powers delivered an impressive one. They combined to out-score Bowling Green and Hawaii 140-13 and amass 1,288 yards of total offense, setting an early tone for the season.

10. Welcome back, James Conner and Nick Chubb. Conner returned to the football field after battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma in the offseason, scoring two touchdowns while leading Pitt to an emotional win. Chubb returned from a devastating leg injury to rush for 222 yards in Georgia's win over North Carolina.
