Loyola student shot to death block from campus identified

Dec. 07--A Loyola University student from Pakistan who was shot to death Friday evening when two attackers tried to rob him and his brother in the Rogers Park neighborhood has been identified, authorities said.

Mutahir Rauf, 23, of the 1400 block of West Pratt Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m. on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

The shooting happened during an attempted robbery about 7:50 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Albion Avenue, a block from the university's campus, said Chicago police spokesman Thomas Sweeney.

Rauf was walking with his brother in the area when two attackers approached them, according to 49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore and police. One of the attackers pulled a gun and ordered them to turn over their money, Moore said.

The victim allegedly believed the gun was a toy and reached for it. During the scuffle, the gun went off and the assailant fled, according to Moore.

The student was fatally shot in the chest and head, Sweeney said. The student's brother was reportedly not injured.

No one is in custody as a result of the shooting, police said.

Loyola University officials confirmed the student's death through a statement on their website Friday evening.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic situation, and we ask that you keep this student's family in your thoughts and prayers," the statement said.

University officials said police are trying to contact the student's family. Once the relatives have been notified, more information would be released, the statement said.
