Loyalist band ask to march in Glasgow as coronavirus restrictions expected to ease

A Loyalist flute band is looking to march in Glasgow with other processions also planned this summer as coronavirus restrictions lift.

Glasgow City Council have confirmed they have received an application from The Pride of Govan Flute Band on July 1 while there are three other planned marches from other groups that day.

A further three processions have also been applied for July 3, a Saturday.

The notifications will still need to go through the normal process – which includes engagement with the organiser and consultation, including with Police Scotland.

But under current coronavirus rules the marches will be severely limited.

The city is expected to move to tier two of coronavirus restrictions from Friday meaning processions with a maximum of 50 participants and a maximum duration of one hour are permitted.

In level one restrictions, a maximum of 100 are allowed a maximum of 100 participants over two hours.

No processions are allowed to take place at level three or level four

The Pride of Govan Flute Band Posted on Facebook yesterday: "The band have today applied to Glasgow city council to have our annual 1st of July parade through Govan."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “We have received a notification of the group’s intention to hold a procession.

"The latest version of the coronavirus health protection levels published by the Scottish Government permits processions at Level 2 and below, with some restrictions on the number of participants and duration.”

There has been a number of recent controversies over mass gatherings in Glasgow as the city remains under tougher coronavirus restrictions than much of the country.
