Loyal dog waited for owner on banks of reservoir until he was pulled from water

A pensioner was found dead in a reservoir while his loyal pet dog sat on the bank waiting for him.

The tragedy happened in Krabi, southern Thailand, on Monday afternoon.

Dutch man Charles Haarlemmermeer, 84, had taken the American Shepherd for a walk near his home.

His wife Pikul Srisomchit, 48, said she became concerned and called police when he had not returned by night time.

Officials searched for the retired European without success. However, villagers noticed the body of an elderly man floating in a reservoir the following morning.

His pet dog, Merlin, was sat at the side looking out over the water.

The corpse - still in black shorts and a blue top - was dragged ashore where his wife identified him.

Police are now probing how the elderly resident came to be found dead in the water.

Officers believe he may have fainted due to the heat, with temperatures reaching almost 40C, and stumbled into the pond.

With tarpaulin on each bank, it may have been too slippery for him to climb back out.

Mr Haarlemmermeer's widow, Pikul, said: "My husband left the house with our dog and didn’t come home.

"I was worried and called the rescue foundation for help. I helped people to search all night."

Police colonel Prapanut Chaikeaw said: "From the preliminary investigation we know that Mr Haarlemmermeer went out every day to exercise in the area. He disappeared on Monday with his dog, who was his companion.

"The dog was waiting with sadness at the water’s edge the next morning.

"More than 20 villagers saw the body floating in the water. This was about 1km from his home.

"It is expected that the deceased may have gone to swim and drowned.

"Or he fell into the pool and was unable to get out because the banks and covered in plastic sheets causing him to slip back down into the water."

Police said Mr Haarlemmermeer's body had been taken to Krabi hospital where medics would perform a post mortem examination to find the cause of death.
