Loyal dog refuses to leave dying owner's side for five hours after horror crash

A devoted pet dog stayed by his dying owner's side for five hours after they were both involved in a horrific road accident .

Luke McKoy, 28, was killed when his car swerved off a motorway during an attempt to overtake another vehicle in Queensland, Australia on Sunday.

The car plummeted 30m down into an embankment and left the young driver fighting for his life.

It took emergency service five hours until they could reach Luke but arrived too late to save him.

In an act of unwavering loyalty, Luke's dog Major refused to leave his owner and waited next to him until his final moments.

Fundraising efforts were made so Major could undergo surgery to fix his broken and dislocated leg.

Sadly, veterinarians decided that the canine could not overcome his injuries and took the heartbreaking decision to put him down.

Luke's sister, Jasmine Nadin, paid tribute to her brother and his "best friend".

She said the duo shared an inseparable bond and were rarely apart from another.

"He taught me so much in life and I had always looked up to him," she told  The Courier Mail .

"Major was Luke's first dog and his best friend", Ms Nadin said.

Queensland Police investigating the crash say they believe that Luke was speeding at the time of the accident.

They have warned motorists to take care on Queensland's roads after six other people were killed in traffic accidents over the weekend.

"Last weekend was incredibly tragic with a number of serious crashes across the state, some of which have claimed innocent lives," Acting Superintendent Neal White said.

Acting Superintendent White added that these accidents would have an 'enormous impact' on families members of the victims.
