Loyal dog refused to leave owner's side after he was killed by falling tree in Storm Ciara

A loyal dog remained by his owner's side after he was killed by a falling tree during this week's Storm Ciara.

The dog walker was killed in Black Wood, in Woolton, Liverpool, shortly after 11am on Tuesday as strong wings and extreme weather battered the country.

Emergency services were called to the scene before a large section of the woodland was cordoned off, reports Liverpool Echo.

A short time later police confirmed that a man in his 60s had died and his family had been informed.

In a statement, the force said: "We can confirm that the man hit by the falling tree branch in Black Wood in Woolton has sadly passed away.

"The man, who is in his 60s and from the Liverpool area, has now been identified and his next of kin have been informed.

"Road closures remain in place in the area."

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police also said that the man's loyal dog was still at his side when police and paramedics arrived at the scene of the tragedy.

The pet was then taken from the area by officers but not before the dog helped officers identify his owner with his microchip.

Liverpool City Council also shared their condolences after the death of the man took place at the council owned woodland.

A council spokesperson said: "A man in his 60s has died after apparently being struck by a falling branch at Black Wood in Woolton during the high winds this morning.

“The council is shocked and saddened to hear of this death and all thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends.

“The emergency services remain at the scene and the area is expected to remain cordoned off to the public for some time.

“The ancient woodland belongs to  Liverpool City Council and the council will co-operate fully with any subsequent investigation.”
