Loyal dog refused to leave dying owner hit by fallen tree in storm

A loyal dog stayed by his owner's side as he lay dying after being hit by a fallen tree.

The dog walker was killed in Black Wood, in Woolton, shortly after 11am on Tuesday as strong winds and extreme weather battered Liverpool.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and fire crews, were called to the scene before a large section of the woodland was cordoned off.

A short time later police confirmed that a man in his 60s had died and his family had been informed.

The pet was then taken from the area by officers once the man was found.

It is also believed that the dog, who was not harmed in the incident, helped officers identify his owner with his microchip.

Liverpool City Council also shared their condolences after the death of the man took place at the council owned woodland.

A council spokesperson said: "A man in his 60s has died after apparently being struck by a falling branch at Black Wood in Woolton during the high winds this morning.

“The council is shocked and saddened to hear of this death and all thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends.

“The emergency services remain at the scene and the area is expected to remain cordoned off to the public for some time.

“The ancient woodland belongs to Liverpool City Council and the council will co-operate fully with any subsequent investigation.”

Images and video footage taken at Black Wood show a huge emergency services presence where a cordon is likely to remain for most of the day.

Forensic officers and search and rescue teams were also seen in the woodland as tributes to the man began to flood in online.
