Loy Krathong and Other Thai Ironies

At the risk of sounding like a party pooper, Loy Krathong always comes across as a very ironic festival. You ask for forgiveness from the water goddess for polluting her all year round by dumping more things in her on one particular night. It's like asking your mum to do an extra big pile of laundry for you on the Mother's Day. Am I right?

This got me thinking about other ironic things or incidents I've spotted recently. Here are some examples, purely for your entertainment.

On October 2, The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society's Facebook shared pictures from a ceremony to officially welcome its new permanent secretary Ajarin Pattanapanchai. She, along with other officials prayed at a Phra Phrom shrine. So much for Thailand 4.0.

On October 10, the Thai army announced its plan to buy 10 more made-in-China tanks next year while rocker Toon Bodyslam is set to embark on a fund-raising run to raise money to buy medical equipment for 11 hospitals across the country. Dear sirs, shouldn't the well-being of the people be your first priority? Maybe you should buy three less tanks so P' Toon doesn't have to run the entire country?

On October 10, Uncle Tu said that the date for a general election would be announced in June next year and that the election would take place in November next year. Isn't it ironic that the guy who overthrew an elected government (regardless of whether you like them or not) gets to be the one who calls the shots on Thailand's democratic progress (or lack thereof).

Meechai Ruchuphan, chairman of the junta-appointed Constitution Drafting Committee, admitted on Monday that he hired his daughter to be his secretary, reportedly with a salary of B47,500 per month. He reasoned that he needed to hire someone he could trust and be able to keep top secrets. Remember how his constitution is often cited as wanting to combat corruption? Well, isn't nepotism a form of corruption?

The Thai Meteorological Department announced that Thai winter started in the middle of October, but you still must carry an umbrella on your way to lunch.

Every time you have to walk on the street because a vendor occupies the "footpath".
