Lowland League preview as East Kilbride, Caledonian Braves and Cumbernauld Colts gear up for new season

Scottish football's fifth tier is gearing up for the big kick-off and competitive football is just a matter of hours away in the Lowland League.

It all starts on Saturday and there are three Lanarkshire sides competing in the Lowland League again this season with Stevie Aitken's East Kilbride, Ricky Waddell's Caledonian Braves and Cumbernauld Colts, co-managed by Craig McKinley and James Orr, all set for a full 32-game season.

And Lanarkshire Live Sport has got you covered for the build-up with our Lowland League Preview Show, visiting all three clubs to see how their preparations are going.

Watch the video above to see ex-Motherwell striker and former EK coach Ally Graham join Paul Thomson to assess their chances this season.

Kelty Hearts are the defending champions after being declared winners in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign and Barry Ferguson's side are expected to be right up there again.

They will face competition from ambitious East Kilbride, who have brought in a new manager in Stevie Aitken and an impressive array of big names, including ex-Partick Thistle star Chris Erskine and former Rangers midfielder Kyle Hutton.

Caledonian Braves have clung on to top scorer Ross McNeil and added to their defensive options with the capture of experienced Andy Dowie, while Cumbernauld Colts have raided Queen's Park to boost their hopes of building on a ninth place finish last term.

In the midst of the pandemic, kick-off comes three months later than usual.

And as other lower leagues remain sidelined following an announcement by the Scottish Government yesterday, the Lowland League has been given the green light.

A lot of hard work has been put in on and off the park by all clubs in the fifth tier to get to this point and when Saturday comes it will be a huge lift for all involved to see their teams take to the pitch.

Games will be played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 and although fans will have to watch from home or follow their club on social media, it's still set to be an exciting and entertaining season.
