Lowland League likely to return in March with split a proposed option to finish season

The Lowland League looks increasingly likely to return in March with senior figures confident ahead of an SFA meeting on Tuesday.

Senior figures will meet with Scottish football's governing body at 5pm on February 9th to discuss potential options for the season returning.

League One and Two clubs are expected to receive the green light on Wednesday to return to competitive action on Tuesday March 2nd.

However, it's understood that the Lowland League will not return on this date with clubs unable to commit to Covid testing like those clubs in League One and Two.

The daily positivity rate in Scotland has fallen to 4.9% which is below the 5% mark which the World Health Organisation considers a pandemic to be 'under control'.

So there is optimistic from senior sources that the Lowland League will be allowed to return, without testing, if the numbers continue to fall.

The resumption date is still unclear but the league have proposed various different options to ensure that the season will be completed.

It's understood that the most viable and popular proposal is to split the league into two - similar to the split in the Premiership.

This proposal would split the top nine team and bottom eight sides and they'd all play each other once to complete the season.

The season is scheduled to be completed by April 17th but it's expected that this will be extended and it must align with League 2 with the promotion play-off - controversially cancelled last season - to be played.

Meanwhile, it's been announced that the Scottish Lowlands Development League has been cancelled.

The league never managed to start due to Covid restrictions and the decision that there wouldn't be sufficient time to fulfil all the fixtures.
