Lowland League D-Day as officials set to discuss suspending season due to coronavirus situation

Lowland League officials will meet tonight to decide whether or not to suspend the season.

Dalbeattie Star are calling on a temporary pause to be put on the campaign due to the latest coronavirus lockdown restrictions and the alarming rise in cases in Dumfries and Galloway.

The Islecroft club has already suspended training in a bid to protect their players, while Saturday’s game against Civil Service Strollers was suspended due to the snow and ice.

Gaffer Ritchie Maxwell wants the fixtures halted but isn’t optimistic that is the decision that will be made.

He said: “In my heart I hope it’s off but it looks like they’re going to continue. That’s what seems to be the stance from the league, that we’ll play on, which puts us in a bit of a difficult position.

“We postponed training again tonight, just like we did last Wednesday, because we’re in a similar position. We don’t want players to be travelling, we don’t want to be meeting in a group of 20, especially locally when we’ve got the prevalence of the new strain.

“We’re trying to avoid contact as much as possible. We’ll see what the decision from the league is and look at and assess what we do later on in the week

A number of people claim Star want the season suspended due to the fact they are currently third bottom but Maxwell – who works for the NHS - insists that is not the case.

He said: “It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting third bottom or third top, the risk to health is the same. We are just looking for a pause of two or three weeks to see what the situation is like at that point and then resume.

“We’ve got plenty of time left where we could be playing two games a week. We could be in a position where we’re playing Saturday, Wednesday for the rest of the season and I don’t think anyone would have any issue with that but only when it’s safe to do so.

“I think we should be proud of ourselves as a club that we’re the ones that have been willing to put our head above the parapet and stand up in what we believe in.

"Other clubs have been in contact and I’ve had a few people contact me personally from clubs to say they back us but we need other people to stand up and speak out as well if they do believe in what we’re saying.”
