Lowland League clubs unanimously reject Brechin City's bid to join

Lowland League clubs have unanimously rejected Brechin City's approach to join the league next season after their relegation from League Two.

At their AGM on Thursday night, all 17 clubs voted to reject the proposal put forward by Brechin.

The Angus club don't want to join the Highland League, as planned, due to geographical reasons.

It is far more difficult for Brechin to attract new signings to play in the Highland League than the Lowland League due to the latter's increased profile and the fact that a majority of players are based in the central belt.

The rules of the tier 5 leagues state that Scottish clubs situated below Dundee will enter the Lowland League and clubs, like Brechin City, positioned above the cut-off will enter the Highland League.

The Daily Mail reported last night that Brechin offered to pay clubs £1,000 per away fixture in a bid to persuade clubs about their plans.

It's understood that those plans would effectively relate to buying 100 tickets at £10 per head.

The Glebe Park side also offered free entry to all away supporters for next season.

SFA Chief Executive Ian Maxwell called Lowland League boss George Fraser to inform him of Brechin's plans on the morning of the AGM on Thursday.

It's understood that Fraser, subsequently, received calls from Brechin City representatives Ken Ferguson and Kevin Mackie as they put their case forward.

The proposal was put forward to clubs who rejected it unanimously and as it stands, there are no plans to reconsider the decision.

Brechin's determination to join the Lowland League should they be relegated from League Two was also made clear last season but no proposal was put forward.
