Lowest rise in coronavirus deaths since lockdown as 15 are recorded in 24 hours

The UK has seen the smallest daily rise in deaths since lockdown began, according to figures from the Department of Health.

A total of 42,647 people have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Sunday.

That is up by 15 from 42,632 the day before - the lowest daily reported rise since March 15.

However, there is often a lag in the reporting of deaths over weekends.

The government figures do not include suspected cases of coronavirus, which means the actual death toll is now believed to be more than 53,500.

NHS England announced a further 20 deaths in hospitals in England bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in the nation to 28,337.

The NHS total is sometimes higher than the UK total given by the Department of Health due to a time lag.

Public Health Wales said one further person had died after testing positive for Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths to 1,478, while the total number of cases there increased by 71 to 15,197.

In Scotland, no new coronavirus deaths have been registered in the last 24 hours, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

A total of 2,472 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, no change on Sunday’s figure.

Scotland's death total previously remained unchanged on June 21, June 15, June 8 and June 7.

Northern Ireland also recorded no further deaths in the past 24 hours.

The Department of Health also said in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Monday, 139,659 tests were carried out or dispatched, with 958 positive results.

Overall, a total of 8,029,757 tests have been carried out and 305,289 cases have been confirmed positive.

The figure for the number of people tested has been “temporarily paused to ensure consistent reporting” across all methods of testing.

The new figures come as prime minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce plans for the hospitality sector to reopen from July 4 this week.

Health secretary Matt Hancock said over the weekend that England is “clearly on track” to further ease lockdown restrictions after repeated calls to reduce the two-metre rule to one metre.

Mr Johnson is discussing the proposed changes with the Covid-19 strategy committee this afternoon, attended by chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance and chief medical officer for England Professor Chris Whitty.
