Lowest number of coronavirus deaths recorded for Renfrewshire since start of pandemic

Renfrewshire has recorded its lowest number of Covid-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

PAISLEY DAILY EXPRESS: Live news as it happens

The new figures, which are released every week by the Office for National Statistics, show that four more people died of coronavirus in the week of May 25 - taking the death toll in Renfrewshire to 194.

The number of deaths has dropped from 13 the previous week, meaning there has been a week-on-week decrease of 66 per cent.

This is the lowest number of fatalities recorded since the week of March 30, when two people succumbed to the illness.

None of the recent deaths have taken place in care homes.

To date, 95 Renfrewshire residents have died in care homes across the country.

All of the recent deaths have taken place in hospitals, with the figures rising from 87 to 91.

A further eight people have died at home or in other institutions.

The Express previously revealed that Renfrewshire had recorded more deaths than Australia - which has a population of 25million.

The local authority, with a population of 178,000, has the third worst death rate per 10,000 people in the country, and also ranks as the fifth worst local authority overall.

The county recorded its highest ever number of deaths in a single week on April 29 with a total of 40.
