Lowest daily number of new coronavirus cases in a month as Ireland continues to grapple with Covid-19

The number of new coronavirus cases announced today is the lowest since April 1, figures have revealed.

Some 221 new cases emerged in the Republic of Ireland today.

While still a relatively high figure, it's the lowest number of new cases revealed in a statement from the National Public Health Emergency Team in exactly a month.

There were 212 new cases announced on Wednesday, April 1, with the latest figures available from 1pm that day.

Back then, there were 3,447 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland - today, there have been 20,833.

On April 1, there were 14 more deaths, taking the death toll then to 85.

Today, Friday May 1, there were 34 more deaths and the death toll now stands at 1,265.

While some heart can be taken from the new figures, especially in comparison with some days in April, the Government and health officials have repeatedly warned against complacency in recent weeks.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar this evening is expected to announced an extension to the current lockdown, which is due to end on May 5.
