Lower leagues stuck in limbo as SFA await Scottish Government decision on 'safe and sustainable plan' to resume

League One and League Two clubs are still awaiting a final decision from the Scottish Government on if they can continue their league season.

The bottom two tiers, the Lowland League, Highland League, West, East and South of Scotland Leagues were all brought to a screeching halt in January.

The SWPL 1 and 2 were also stopped amid rising Covid figures across the county.

However, the restrictions were only put in place until March 1 and the governing bodies have been locked in talks with ministers.

The SFA have revealed a series of discussions have taken place via video conference with all leagues affected by the suspension, to establish the measures and protocols under which each might resume their competitions.

This information has been shared with the Scottish Government but there is still no final decision.

Jason Leitch had previously revealed he expects news this week on when football below the Championship could restart.

Clubs like Clyde, Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath have played just eight games so far this term.

Full-time sides including Partick Thistle, Falkirk and Queen's Park all face a nervous wait to find out if they will have a chance to climb the leagues this term.

An SFA president Rod Petrie: “We are grateful to all leagues, clubs and participants affected by the temporary suspension for their patience and understanding during this period of uncertainty. They have played their part in keeping the nation safe and restricting the potential spread of the virus.

“I would also like to thank the representatives from those leagues and clubs, who have been proactive and collaborative in giving their input into safe and sustainable plans for a to return to competition.

“These plans have already been discussed with government officials. We look forward to hearing when and in what circumstances those leagues which have been suspended can return to training and, ultimately, to playing.”
