'Low-life' with 'no morals' stole phone from M5 crash scene during traffic jam, witness claims

An opportunistic "low-life" stole a phone from the scene of a serious collision on the M5, a witness has said.

The yesterday (July 8) as an air ambulance landed on the motorway to help the casualties.

The northbound side of the motorway was completely shut from around midday.

Sarah King and her family were driving back from Cornwall to their home in Bedfordshire when they witnessed the crash.

She was driving on the northbound carriageway between Burnham-on-Sea and junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare when they saw a Range Rover towing a caravan swaying along the motorway, Somerset Live reports.

She described how the caravan then tipped onto its left side which then flipped the Range Rover upside down.

Mrs King said the other vehicles managed to stop safely and a few members of the public, including herself, got out of their cars and went to reassure the people caught up in the crash.

A woman who went over to comfort one of the passengers involved in the crash had her phone stolen by a young man on the motorway, Mrs King claims.

He had vanished almost as quickly as he had arrived, she added.

What to do in a motorway crash

Mrs King said: "A member of the public was comforting the passenger.

"She then placed her mobile phone on the floor and some low-life person stole it and amazingly left the scene.

"The person actually got out of a car, came over and stole the phone.

"The lady whose phone was stolen even asked if someone had seen her phone. They must have left the scene before the 999 teams arrived."

Mrs King was all the more outraged by the alleged theft because of the selfless way so many people rushed to help those injured when the caravan flipped.

"Having previously been a health care assistant I quickly got out of my car to go help," Mrs King said.

"A few other members of the public came too. We reassured the people involved (in the crash) and kept them calm.

'You have no morals'

"The emergency services arrived within 15 minutes and carried out their amazing work.

"Members of the public who got caught up on the motorway were all fine and waited patiently.

"The most important thing was for these people to be rescued.

"They were taken to hospital not knowing the extent of their injuries but I know they have both had a very lucky escape.

"I would just like to say thank you to all those that helped and to whoever stole the lady's phone, you have no morals."

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has been contacted for comment.
