Low-flying helicopter spotted above Edinburgh on Wednesday afternoon – this is what it was doing

A low-flying helicopter spotted in the skies above Edinburgh today belonged to a VIP company which transports celebrities and royals.

A number of people were surprised to see the rotorcraft heading south over the Scottish capital mid-afternoon.

There was speculation on social media that the helicopter belonged to the police, and was responding to an ongoing incident in the Lothians area.

However it's since emerged that wasn't the case, and it was owned and being operated by "executive travel" company Apollo Air Services.

The VIP firm offer "door-to-door" travel solutions for the discerning family, celebrities, business people and royalty.

They add on their website: "It goes without saying that this exceptional service comes with complete anonymity and discretion for all our clients."

The helicopter was seen flying over the city in the mid-afternoon, and was scheduled to land in Edinburgh shortly before 3pm. It appeared to have come across the Firth of Forth from Fife.

Apollo Air Services use the AugustaWestland AW109SP helicopter, and the company currently has five of these in use across the UK.

They say these helicopters can operate in all weather conditions (ideal for Scotland) and are often used by police and rescue teams in the mountains of Switzerland.
