Low-flying aircraft could be seen over Falkirk during joint military exercise

Low-flying aircraft could be seen over Falkirk during a joint military exercise this month.

Exercise Typhoon Warrior 21 will see both British and American jets and helicopters in the skies alongside large transport planes.

The dates which span a two week period have been highlighted by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as August 17, 19, 24 and 26.

However, there is some confusion over when the US Air Force, RAF and aircraft provider Draken Aviation's activities will take place.

While the MOD says they will occur between 10am and 12pm each day, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) documents suggest between 8.30am and 2.15pm.

Under current rules, fixed-wing aircraft often fly as low as 250ft but sometimes operate down to just 100ft in some areas.

Meanwhile, helicopters routinely operate down to 100 feet, but may operate down to ground level for certain tasks if necessary.

The CCA said the public can expect a “large force exercise involving up to 60 military aircraft operating in mixed formations including fast jets, intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance aircraft, air to air refuelling, and air mobility assets (both fixed wing and rotary wing)," according to the Civil Aviation Authority.

"Exercise traffic will conduct air-to-air combat radar profiles, supersonic flight, radar and communications jamming, and air combat serials. Airspace control orders will be issued separately by the sponsor to all control agencies.”

The Leuchars Army base in Fife has featured in military exercises of this kind, generating noise complaints from residents, but other air bases could also be involved.

Nearby Scottish areas which may also be affected include Stirling and Clackmannanshire.
