Low Fell Post Office remains closed one week after terrifying armed raid

A community is today still without its local Post Office one week after an armed robbery forced it to close.

Two raiders struck at the shop in the Low Fell area of Gateshead last Tuesday.

Police are still hunting the pair, who threatened staff with a weapon, before fleeing with £1,500 in cash, in a broad daylight heist.

Low Fell's Post Office is a small counter located within a pet shop called Pets n Bitz, on Beaconsfield Road.

The shop has re-opened since the raid, but the Post Office counter remains closed.

And a sign outside the building apologises to customers.

It says: "Pet shop open. Post Office closed until further notice. Sorry!"

Police say they believe the robbers, who struck at just after 12pm, made their getaway in a car that had been stolen from a women in Low Fell the evening before.

The driver was approached and threatened by one suspect while in Lowery's Lane, at around 7.15pm last Monday.

The dark coloured car was later found in the Beacon Lough area of Gateshead.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said today: "Enquiries are ongoing."
