'Lovely' woman found dead at home, aged 31, inquest hears

The death of a cleaner from Bury remains unexplained, following an inquest.

Stacey Riddell was found dead at her home in Ripon Avenue, Whitefield, in August last year.

Today assistant coroner Michael Salt held an inquest into the 31-year-old's death, at Rochdale Coroner's Court.

The court heard that Miss Riddell, who was initially brought up in Stretford, had been diagnosed with epilepsy in her teenage years.

After studying catering at Bury College, her epilepsy prevented her from securing a job. According to Miss Riddell's grandmother Beryl Hughes she eventually started to drink heavily and take drugs, which she believes caused her to suffer with anxiety and depression.

According to Ms Hughes, Miss Riddell started a "fractious" and "volatile" relationship with a man called James Cornwell in 2016.

In a statement, Ms Hughes described Miss Riddell's personality as "Jekyll and Hyde".

She added: "She was a very nice girl apart from all that, she could be very caring.

"But if someone doesn't want to be helped, there's very little you can do."

The court heard that Miss Riddell had a history of self-harm and had been admitted to hospital on numerous occasions in the months leading up to her death. On those occasions, she insisted there was no attempt to end her life and she was discharged as being low risk.

On August 21 2019, Mr Cornwell visited Miss Riddell's house and forced entry when there was no answer. He found Miss Riddell's body in her bedroom.

Blister packs containing anti-depressants and Miss Riddell's epilepsy medication were also found in the bedroom.

Senior investigating officer DI Morgan said that it was clear that Miss Riddell had died a number of days prior to being found. She also confirmed that there was not believed to be third party involvement and there was no suicide note or message at the scene.

Pathologist Dr Nkonge carried out a post mortem on Miss Riddell's body but said that it was difficult to ascertain a cause of death, due to the delay between her death and being found.

Dr Nkonge confirmed that there were no injuries to Miss Riddell but said that there was swelling on the tongue - consisted with Miss Riddell suffering an epileptic seizure.

He said that a possible cause of death could have been "sudden unexpected death in epilepsy" but told the court that an "unascertained" conclusion would be more accurate.

Recording an open verdict, Mr Salt, concluded that the cause of death was unascertained.

He said: "It seemed she had died some days before August 21 and that has led to some difficulties in establishing a cause of death.

"Originally Dr Nkonge did offer a cause of death which was sudden unexpected death in epilepsy but there are certain evidential tests and it has to be a probability rather than a possibility.

"I don't feel there's any suggestion of suicide and there's no direct evidence or implication of drugs.

"The conclusion leaves us a little bit up in the air but hopefully today has given you some more idea of what has happened."

Paying his respects to Ms Hughes, he added: "Something I can't imagine is losing your granddaughter.

"Class A drugs seemed to cut across Stacey's life and she by all accounts had been a pleasant and polite woman. Sadly her character was changed."

Following the inquest, Ms Hughes paid tribute to her granddaughter.

She told Manchester Evening News: "We loved her very much and we will always remember her in our thoughts.

"She was a lovely girl."
