'Lovely' Cork taxi driver goes 'beyond the call of duty' to help woman, 62, after accident

A Cork taxi driver went above and beyond his duty to help a stricken women after a bad accident.

Passage-West woman Fionuala O'Gorman, 62, called a taxi after injuring her legs in a fall last month but but by the time they arrived her condition deteriorated so much so that she couldn't even walk.

Luckily, Riverside taxi's driver Rory Hearne came to the door and carried her out to his taxi and dropped her to Cork University Hospital.

Fionuala told CorkBeo : "I was pottering around the house looking for something to do and I saw there was a stain on the window.

"So I got the two-step ladder but it went one way and I went the other, all of a sudden I felt a bad pain but thought it was a bit dramatic ringing an ambulance so I called the local taxi.

"Ten minutes passed and the taxi was here but I could barely walk, I couldn't move, so Rory had to carry me out to the taxi and brought me to CUH without fuss.

"He was fairly shocked when he arrived at the door, this was way beyond the call of duty but he was brilliant, he's a lovely fella.

"He has since called asking if I was alright and checked on me, a really nice guy - they're a local taxi company Riverside so I'd know them from before."

Rory himself has said that the whole thing "was no big deal" and told CorkBeo he was happy to help the local woman.

Mr Hearne said: "It was no big deal, I saw she couldn't walk so I gave her a piggy back into the cab and brought her to the hospital.

"It was only a short trip so it really wasn't a big deal at all.

"We would know her, we've picked her up a few times before so we always try to do our best to help out locals if we can at all."

Former nurse Fionuala, who is now a part-time UCC lecturer, had to forgo a trip to Mexico to attend a nursing conference last Friday because her injuries wouldn't allow it.

She added: "I fractured the bone at the back of my right heel and injured the other one - I also hurt my wrist after falling on the crutches.

"I should be on a beach in Mexico now - I'm here at home with two gammy legs.

"I was in the hospital for around a week just because I couldn't walk and I had to learn how to use crutches - I've been a nurse for years but never realised how hard that part was. "

And Fionuala was full of praise for local Riverside taxis who are a small team of two drivers who operate in Passage-West and the surrounding areas.
