'Loved that man to bits' - Jamie Carragher tribute to Liverpool legend Gerard Houllier

Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen have both paid poignant tributes to former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier.

The Frenchman passed away today at the age of 73.

The news was first reported by French outlet RMC, with the cause of death as of yet unknown.

Houllier managed Liverpool for six seasons between 1998 and 2004, having initially joined the Reds as joint manager alongside Roy Evans.

He is credited with modernising Liverpool, bringing in new techniques to training and preparation for games, as well as overseeing the construction of the Liverpool Academy in Kirkby.

Houllier led the Reds to a historic treble in 2001, winning the UEFA Cup, League Cup and FA Cup in one season. He'd later add the UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield, before another League Cup was won against Manchester United in 2003.

Houllier enjoyed a close rapport with his players at Liverpool and both Carragher and Owen were key to helping the Reds to success under his management.

Both former players tweeted tributes to Houllier today.

Carragher said: "Absolutely devastated by the news about Gerard Houllier, I was in touch with him only last month to arrange him coming to Liverpool.

"Loved that man to bits, he changed me as a person and as a player, and got LFC back winning trophies. RIP Boss."

Meanwhile Owen, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2001 while being managed by Houllier, added: "Absolutely heartbroken to hear that my old boss, Gérard Houllier, has sadly passed away. A great manager and a genuinely caring man"
