‘Loved by everyone she met’ Husband of tragic Covid victim completes heartbreaking walk for wife

The husband of a tragic Covid victim has completed a heartbreaking walk for his wife.

John MacDonald raised more than £15,000 for Ninewells Hospital after Fiona died aged just 47.

The mother-of-three lost her battle in April 2020, four weeks after being diagnosed with the virus.

John, from Blairgowrie, walked the West Highland Way with a group of friends from his local masonic lodge and raised money for the ICU team who cared for Fiona.

Praising the doctors and nurses for their efforts, he said, “We wanted to present the staff in ICU with our donation on 1 April 2022, as this would have been Fiona’s 49th birthday.

“We raised £15,500, smashing an initial £1,000 target. The level of care Fiona received in ICU was outstanding.

“We wanted to give something back as a thank you and hopefully make patients, staff and families lives a bit easier at their most challenging time.

“Fiona was loved by everyone she met. She was the most important part of our family and put being a mum and wife before anything else.”

Explaining about Fiona’s illness, John added, “She was taken into hospital via ambulance on March 18 after collapsing at home having developed cold symptoms.

“Sadly, Fiona’s condition deteriorated, and she developed blood clots that required surgery.

“Following the surgery Fiona became more ill and we were called in to say our goodbyes, four weeks after she was admitted to ICU.”

Fiona was mum to Jacquelyne, 29, Lauren, 26, and Scott, 19 and she worked as a Pupil Support Assistant, at Hill Primary School in Blairgowrie.

The cheque was presented by Scott, Jacquelyne, Lauren and John MacDonald to Alison McIntosh, senior charge nurse in ICU at Ninewells Hospital.

Tayside Health Fund spokesperson, Richard McIntosh, said: “On behalf of the Fund, I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated.

“We are touched and delighted by this incredible donation. The funds will be put to excellent use in supporting staff working in NHS Tayside’s ICU.”
