Loved and lost: We remember the people in Greater Manchester who have died after contracting Covid-19

Coronavirus has brought heartache to thousands of families across Greater Manchester.

More than 3,800 people have died in our region's hospitals alone. And tragically, this number is continuing to rise.

Behind the Covid-19 death statistics that we publish each day are human beings who all had stories to tell.

At the  M.E.N  we have pledged to  pay tribute to  the special people who have died with this terrible disease.

This week, two more families have been in touch with a tribute for their loved ones.

Here are Eileen and Iris' stories.

Eileen Gurney

Eileen lived in Stockport. She was married to husband Leslie and mum to Susan, Eileen and Monica.

She also had a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Eileen was born in Oldham in 1921 and lived there throughout her early life.

After leaving school, she went to work at the Manchester Guardian as a clerk.

There she met her husband-to-be Leslie, who was a messenger boy at the Manchester Evening News.

She served in the army during the war then married Leslie in 1947. They went on to live above the M.E.N office in Shaw Heath, Stockport.

After raising her family, Eileen went back to work at the M.E.N and stayed there until she retired in 1982.

She was keen cook, enjoyed crafting and reading her daily copy of the Guardian.

She loved to travel with Leslie and especially enjoyed visiting the Far East, Sri Lanka, and various places in Europe.

Leslie retired from the circulation department at the M.E.N in 1983 and they continued to spend a great deal of time doing charity work for their church.

After her husband died in 2004, Eileen who was always fiercely independent, lived alone until she was 97 when she went to live in a Bramhall care home.

She sadly died aged 99 on May 8 after testing positive for Covid in April.

Paying tribute, Eileen Livesey said: "Eileen was a much loved wife, mum, grandmother and great grandmother.

"The younger members of the family referred to her as GGG (great grandma Gurney).

"She was a very sociable lady who had many good friends and neighbours and never turned down an opportunity to visit her family members, even those living far afield, in her old age.

"Even when suffering poor health she was always very stoical and being a person of strong religious faith, always thought of others first.

"She will be greatly missed by her family and many other people."

She was mum to Lee and Lisa, wife to Stanley and grandmother to Lucie, Emily, Alfie, James and Elsie.

Her son Lee said she was an incredibly hard-working woman who dedicated her life to working in the care sector.

Iris died aged 62 on March 28 at home. She tested positive for coronavirus following her passing.

Paying tribute, Lee said: "She was an incredible mum who sacrificed so much to make sure we didn't go without.

"Nine months on from losing her to Covid-19 and our hearts are still breaking. Gone too soon."

Lee also wanted to share a poem in a tribute for his mum.

The poem reads: "In our darkest hour. In my deepest despair. Will you still care? Will You Be There?

"In my trials. And my tribulations. Through our doubts. And frustrations.

"In my violence. In my turbulence. Through my fear. And my confessions.

"In my anguish and my pain. Through my joy and my sorrow. In the promise of another tomorrow.

"I'll never let you part. For you're always in my heart."
