Michael Cimino has spoken out about the death threats he received while playing a gay character in Love, Victor.

The 21-year-old actor plays the title character in the Hulu series, which is a spin-off from Love, Simon and is now in its second series.

Speaking to Attitude, Michael said that he disappointed with the negative response that he has received in certain quarters since taking on the role.

Michael identifies as straight and this has not gone down well with some members of the LGBT community.

Speaking about the response to the role, Michael said: "I've definitely had some criticism from the LGBT community for being in the role. "

He continued: "I've had death threats, which is horrible. But the show is important to me.

"The messages of hate - I came into it knowing that would happen, regardless of how good I was."

Michael also said that he even received homophobic messages from members of his own family.

He continued: "I got some homophobic comments - I kind of expected that to happen

"I didn't expect it from my own family members, though."

Michael has continued to make it clear that he allies with the LGBT community, saying: "There's nothing wrong with being gay. That ignorance is often something that's been passed on from generations prior.

"I always approach that [by saying], 'These are normal people that are struggling and they shouldn't have to struggle.'"

Despite the negativity, Michael said that some have listened: "I have changed opinions. I had some friends who are religious and they've changed their perspective on things."

Michael insists he had the best intentions in taking the role even though he is straight.

He added: "It's an honour to play Victor, and a big responsibility. I went in with the pure intent to represent that correctly.

"I held myself to a really high standard to make sure everyone going through this story felt represented by the show."
