Love letters between Co Down man and American woman found in bottle

Love letters between a Co Down man and American woman have been found washed up on the coast of Northern Ireland.

A National Trust ranger made the discovery last month while carrying out a nest count on Cockle Island near Groomsport.

Inside the Black Bush whiskey bottle, there were 20 letters and photographs charting the relationship of the mystery couple.

Posting on the Strangford Lough and Ards Peninsula - National Trust page on May 22, they revealed they had discovered the bottle but due to water getting in, they had to wait for the contents to dry out before being able to reveal the real story.

On Tuesday, they shared the mystery of the 20 letters and photographs charting a relationship across the Atlantic.

In a statement on their Facebook page, they said: "The wait is over! We have opened and uncovered the mysteries of the bottle found by a Ranger on Cockle Island, Groomsport.

"For reasons that will become obvious, we have chosen to blur out names and cover faces.

"So... our bottle was stuffed full of about 20 letters and photographs, charting the relationship of a couple through the letters written.

"They are romantic, and full of love and faith... along with some cute pictures of the guy and girl.

"It seems the guy lives near Groomsport, and the girl is from America - the letters are from her to him.

"We don't know why the letters were set adrift on the tide, and to be honest, it's none of our business... but we are delighted to be part of this romantic tale.

"Messages in a bottle are much more interesting than texts."
