Love lands 1000 Guineas success for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore with dominant display at Newmarket

Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien landed his fourth 1000 Guineas success in five years as Love, partnered by Ryan Moore, scored an impressive success in the Newmarket Classic.

With much of the Ballydoyle focus on the Irish equivalent next weekend, O'Brien uncharacteristically sent just one runner across for the Group One contest, but it proved enough as she pulled clear to win by a comfortable four-and-a-quarter lengths.

The Richard Hannon-trained Cloak Of Spirits took advantage of the apparent pace bias to make much of the running and hold on for second, with the previously unbeaten favourite, Quadrilateral, who raced keenly early on, third for Jason Watson and Roger Charlton.

The 4/1 winner was immediately cut into short-priced favouritism for the Oaks at Epsom next month, with O’Brien confirming that will likely be her next port of call.

“She’s a very uncomplicated filly and we’ve always thought a lot of her,” winning jockey Moore told ITV Racing. “A typical Galileo filly and if it wasn’t for her last run last year you’d have been pretty confident she was the one to beat here. She was in control from a long way out.”

Champion jockey Oisin Murphy enjoyed a fantastic weekend, backing up 2000 Guineas success on Kameko on Saturday with a treble on Sunday, but the well-fancied Millisle was never in contention and finished seventh.

Raffle Prize, for the in-form Mark Johnston, was the subject of a late market move but missed the start and eventually tailed home last of the 15.
