'Love jihad' accused lecturer suspended

BAREILLY: A college lecturer, 27, was suspended for having an "affair" with his student, 19, after members of the Akhil Bharatiya Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at the college located in Shahjahanpur and accused him of "love jihad".

The girl, who is pursuing a one-year diploma at the college, said she had made no complaint against the man. After a photograph of the girl at an eatery with the lecturer went viral on social media, the ABVP members decided to raise the issue with the college administration. The lecturer is working on a contractual basis and has been teaching in the college for over six years. He told TOI: "After ABVP members made a complaint, the college administration sent me a notice saying that I have been suspended for my activities. I will take it up with the college administration and request them to give me a chance to prove my innocence. I have given so many years to the college and delivered good results for them."

A college student said that the girl in question became quite upset after the picture was circulated on the college's social media groups. "I don't know why people do this without thinking about the person and the parents."

The college principal, meanwhile, said, "We have suspended the lecturer after discussing the matter with senior members of the college administration. We can't share any further details." A student union leader who complained against the lecturer told TOI, "Such conduct is against all ethics and so we raised the matter and sought the lecturer's suspension."
