Love Islanders watch historic Euro final – only to be devastated as England lose

The Love Island cast were allowed to break traditional rules on Sunday night to tune in to watch the nail biting England v Italy 2020 UEFA European Football Championship grand final.

Traditionally, contestants on Love Island are left to live in a bubble of blissful ignorance for the outside world – but a special dispensation was granted for the iconic football match.

Sunday night saw England play in a Euro Cup final for the first time ever and they took on Italy in an attempt to win their first major international football event in almost 60 years.

But sadly for England fans, the results were in favour of the UK's European neighbours as Italy won on penalties – with the England team, almost as if as tradition, stalled in the shoot out and lost.

The Love Island contestants went through an array of emotions as they watched Harry Kane and the boys play their hearts out at Wembley Stadium.

England took an early lead during the game – scoring the first goal of the night.

But things got tense when Italy equalised with seconds to go before the full time whistle could be blown.

Extra time was played, and as the score still stood at 1-1 at the end of the match, penalties were drawn and England lost as Italy scored three goals and England only managed two.

Footage was shared on Love Island: After Sun showing the contestants watching in dismay as the dream of an English victory disappeared.

Chloe Burrows announced that the group would be allowed to watch the match as she received a text reading: “Tonight you will be able to watch the England football team play Italy in the final of the European Championship!”

The boys roared with excitement – while Jake Cornish and Toby Aromolaran jumping in the pool in celebration.

But the excitement turned to anguish and anger when the group watched the English team fail at the final hurdle, with Hugo Hammond and Aaron Francis covering their faces with their hands, and Brad McClelland unleashing a swear-filled tirade as the penalties were lost.

Speaking to the After Sun studio later, Liberty Poole revealed the lads were struggling to accept the final result.

She said: “The guys are gutted. All the girls are like: ‘What’s going on?’ – but the guys are gutted.”

The waitress, from Birmingham, suggested Gareth Southgate had made a huge mistake with his choice of players taking the penalties, saying; “Jack Grealish should have been allowed to do penalties!”

She added: “It was nice to watch. Obviously the girls were just trying to make guesses and have a joke throughout the commentary. But the lads were proper in to it. Jake was chanting all the way through it.”

Love Island continues on ITV2 and via the ITV Hub every night at 9pm
