Love Island viewing figures suffer big drop as fans complain to Ofcom

For the first time in years, Love Island has suffered a big drop in ratings, with nearly a million less people tuning in compared to its launch episode than last year.

The show's first ever winter series launched on ITV2 on Sunday night with the new Love Island lineup including Lewis Capaldi's ex Paige Turley and Rochelle Humes' sister Sophie Piper.

They went into the villa at the weekend but ratings did not match the numbers tuning in for the start of series gone by which have broken records for the channel and always increased year on year.

Overnight figures showed that  2.5 million viewers tuned in to watch the Islanders enter the South African villa, compared to 3.3 million last June.

That number doesn't taken into account the number of viewers who watched the show on catch up, although the first episode also saw ITV Hub hit by a technical issue , to the frustration of many fans.

Hundreds of viewers have complained to Ofcom about the show so far. The majority are about Islander Ollie Williams being allowed in the villa, with the 23-year-old, who was seen posing next to a dead animal in a now deleted Instagram picture, subject of

At the end of Monday night's episode the contestants were hit by the news that two of them would be dumped from the island by the end of the week after the first recoupling of the series.
