Love Island viewers were unable to look away as the food challenge made a dramatic return on Monday's episode

Love Island viewers found themselves unable to look away from their screen as a classic challenge made its return on Monday evening.

That's right, it was time for the food relay!

The aim of the challenge was for the boys to pass the entire contents of a Sunday dinner in record time to the girls.

The winners were the couple who presented the best plate of food at the end of the challenge.

The first round saw the boys throwing pieces of meat as the girls attempt to catch it, followed by the second round where the boys passed the rest of the meal using only their mouths.

It was suitably disgusting and cringey - but viewers were still glued to the action.

One said: "I’m so glad I skipped dinner (second vaccine made me nauseous a bit) ‘cause the food challenge is VIOLENT"

A second simply said: "Oh no I hate the food relay challenge"

A third agreed, saying: "Ugh, the food challenge. NO THANKS. I can’t stomach it. Tell me when it’s over."

And there was more horror once the challenge was done.

In the end, the decision came down to Jake & Liberty to pick the winners - Liam and Millie!

Ofcom is now able to take entire TV channels off air if bosses fail to protect their participants in hit shows such as Love Island.

The TV regulator has put in new rules to protect the wellbeing of those who take part in reality shows – which extend to removing a broadcaster’s licence if they fail to comply.

Adam Baxter, Ofcom’s Director of Broadcasting Standards, said: “This means that broadcasters now have to take due care of people they feature, who might be at risk of significant harm –primarily vulnerable people and those not used to being in the public eye."
