Love Island viewers slam song use amid Danny Bibby racist slur controversy

Love Island viewers have criticised the show for its use of the song ’N***** in Paris’ in Sunday’s episode.

The instalment opened the episode with an excerpt from the song by Kanye West and Jay-Z but with some lyrics, including explicit content, edited out, with the backing primarily being heard.

The choice of song has been criticised following the controversy surrounding new bombshell arrival Danny Bibby who had apologised earlier in the week for having used the n-word on social media back in 2019 when replying to a comment by a white friend.

Danny had said from the Love Island villa: "I'd like to take the time to apologise to anyone that may have taken offence to my inappropriate remark."

Love Island's Danny Bibby has apologised for using a racist slur on social media back in 2019 (ITV)

He continued: “I never meant anything malicious by this comment at all. I am not a racist person and it's unacceptable language and ignorant.

“I meant no offence and feel like I have really learnt from my mistakes and will never use that word again. I am a kind loving person and hopefully you get to see that in the show."

Danny’s father Richard had previously said in a statement released through ITV: "Danny does not have a racist bone in his body and there were no racist intentions to this post.”

The show has now been criticised for using a Kanye West and Jay-Z song amid the controversy surrounding Danny (ITV)

He added: "Although it was not done maliciously, it was a mistake. I absolutely apologise on his behalf for the offence this wording may have caused. That would never have been his intention."

After the apology from Danny, he remains in the Love Island villa, but some viewers on social media were not impressed by the show’s song choice on Sunday in light of the controversy.

One person penned on Twitter : “The opening song for tonight’s #LoveIsland is N***** IN PARIS after everything that’s happened with Danny? In the MIDDLE of BLM?”

Some viewers have encouraged complaints to Ofcom about the song choice (itv)

A different Love Island viewer wrote: “Pls don’t forget to report ITV to ofcom for playing n***** in Paris at the start of the show”.

Another tweeted: "The cheek of Love Island to play N***** in Paris, mocking it #LoveIsland ".

Meanwhile, another Twitter user penned: “Really Love Island? Out of all the songs you choose N.... in Paris?? Who is responsible for this?! #LoveIsland ”.

Elsewhere, one social media user noted: “I find it ironic that Danny has been using the N word and The producers of @LoveIsland decided to use N***** in Paris as the intro song".

Finally, Love Island 2019 winner Amber Gill wrote: “Surely they didn’t choose this song LIKE SURELY NOT I AM DEAD [laughing emojis] #LoveIsland ”.

The Mirror has reached out to ITV for comment on this story.

*Love Island continues on weekdays and Sundays at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub with episodes also being added to BritBox the following morning.
