Love Island v Euro 2020: ITV2 dating show loses nearly 1 million viewers on launch as footy fans stick to Euros France v Switzerland

Love Island’s first episode attracted a whopping 2.5million viewers for ITV2 on Monday night but this was dwarfed by fans glued to world champions France crashing out of Euro 2020.

Around 7.5 million watched Les Bleus being ejected from the Euro’s villa after Kylian Mbappe’s vital penalty was saved against Switzerland’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

This clearly had a knock-on effect as Love Island’s ratings dropped dramatically from the 3.3 million who watched the 2019 summer premiere.

But ITV2’s biggest audience of the year so far watched the shock twist when the matched up cast were told that Chloe Burrows, 25, would be coming in and choosing one of the men to form a couple with.

Shortly before the start of Love Island, ITV tweeted to say its streaming platform was experiencing technical difficulties, while a large number of viewers posted to say they were having trouble watching the programme online.

Luckily England and Germany will play their game at 5pm tonight on the BBC so Love Island fans won’t have to make any tough decisions.

But the Love Island cast won’t be able to tune in to any of the games for the duration of the show even if England make it to the final. With the TV firmly switched off we’re sure they will find plenty of other distractions to occupy themselves.

Love Island continues at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
