Love Island stars Malin Andersson and Alexandra Cane slam lack of body diversity

Love Island stars Alexandra Cane and Malin Andersson have joined fans in criticising the show for a lack of body diversity.

Show bosses promised this year’s bunch of singletons would 'reflect the diversity of our audience' after previously facing a backlash, but Monday’s big reveal didn’t do much to dispel the critics.

Former Love Island alumnus Cane, who appeared in 2018, asked: “Where the curvy girls at?”

Andersson, who starred in the 2016 series, wrote: “And I thought they would have some diversity. Meh.”

Last week, plus-size model and mental health campaigner Jada Sezer was heavily tipped to be entering the villa.

“Previous years have been criticised for a lack of diversity among contestants,” a source told The Sun. “This year producers are determined to have more variation among the Islanders.

“Jada would be a perfect choice because she is passionate about body positivity.”

ITV previously addressed concerns about the lack of diversity within the popular show by saying that they “strive” to reflect all bases.

A spokesperson said: “When casting for Love Island, we always strive to reflect the age, experiences and diversity of our audience and this year is no exception with a cross section of different personalities and backgrounds in the villa.”

Among this year’s Love Island cast are professional dancer Curtis Pritchard and boxer Tommy Fury as well as a scientist, pharmacist, air craft engineer and a chef.

Love Island is on ITV2, Monday at 9pm
