Love Island star and abuse survivor Tayla Damir calls Johnny Depp verdict 'triggering'

Love Island Australia winner Tayla Damir has said that she found Johnny Depp's legal win against his ex-wife Amber Heard "triggering".

The 25-year-old opened up about her own experience of domestic violence and slammed the response to the trial.

Tayla, who is engaged to an AFL premiership player Nathan Broad, said it was "never ok to make fun of domestic violence".

Johnny won his libel case against Amber after she wrote an article for the Washington Post in which she claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse.

The jury found Heard's statements about her marriage were "false" and she acted with "actual malice".

However, throughout the trial there had been memes, videos and jokes made about Amber - which she herself expressed upset over.

She took to Instagram with a statement: "As someone who has been through domestic violence in a relationship at a young age and survived, the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case is extremely triggering.

"'The case has been seen as a drama series to the world. An opportunity for memes and TikTok videos. The worst thing about this court case is that neither of them are fighting for domestic abuse changes but instead arguing about their reputations.

"It's a case built on ego."

She also shared her fears that victims of domestic violence would worry that "no one would believe them" after the public's reaction to the court case.

The TV star asked: "For people in domestic relationships, one of their biggest fears is that no one will believe them and when you watch how the world has reacted to this case (taken the opportunity to create a mockery of it) do you blame them?"

"Regardless of who is at fault here. There is never a time or place where it is ok to make fun or light of domestic violence claims," she continued.

"Think about how many people would be too scared to come forward due to the world's reaction over the last few weeks,"

"Imagine if there was a loved one of yours stuck in a domestic relationship, and they saw you sharing a meme from this case. Do you really think they would now confide in you?"

Tayla and Nathan shared the news that they were engaged in May this year, with Tayla calling him her "forever love".

The 28-year-old footballer got down on one knee at their home in Melbourne.

Sharing a selection of photos of her and Nathan, she wrote: "My forever," in the caption.

"I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend."

The moment he proposed was perfectly captured on their home CCTV.

Nathan said that Melbourne's Covid restrictions had ruined his original plans for his proposal.

"Covid ruined the first plan but it was never going to stop me from proposing to my best friend,' he wrote.

"Knew these cameras would come in handy one day. Love you forever, Tay."
