Love Island's Theo Campbell opens up about devastating eye injury following freak champagne cork accident

Theo Campbell has opened up about his devastating eye injury following a freak accident while partying in Ibiza.

The Love Island star has lost his sight after a champagne cork hit him directly in his right eye.

He explained that he’d had seven stitches in his eye - and was initially terrified that doctors were going to have to "scoop" his eyeball out.

Wearing a black eye patch, Theo spoke today on This Morning about the terrifying moment he was struck by the cork last month.

Theo said: "It was a bad pain. It was an eerie pain. I couldn't open my eye at first. I couldn’t see and was stumbling. I was like 'no, no this hasn't happened'.

"I waited two minutes hoping the worst case scenario hadn’t happened. I looked down and saw blood."

He explained the accident happened at a party where 100 bottles were opened in celebration. Theo removed his glasses after getting champagne sprayed in his face, but another bottle went off and shot a cork into his open eye.

“It all happened so fast,” he said.

After the incident, Theo was rushed to hospital where he was in pain for days while waiting to hear from the Spanish doctors whether he could lose his eyeball.

Theo's girlfriend and Love Island star Kaz Crossley flew out to Ibiza to be at his bedside while they found out what the prognosis was.

"I said 'doctor will I be able to see again?' I was quite upset. He said 'don't worry about seeing again, we will try and save the eyeball',” Theo recounted.

"I rang Kaz saying 'oh my god they're going to take my eye out'."

Incredibly, Theo - who is running a 10k race for charity in 10 days’ time - remained positive as he spoke about the impact the injury will have on his life, and praised his girlfriend for her support.

He said: "She’s been the best. I’m quite positive about it. I’ve got so much love and support.

"She flew out straight away no questions asked. Turned up at the hospital and stayed at the bed with me for four or five days.

"I didn't think it was that big a deal. I thought it's my eye my problem. I’m being supportive about it as Kaz has really helped out."

Theo added: "Life isn't over with one eye."

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10.30am.
