Love Island's Shaughna talks of her 'overwhelming' role after Grenfell tragedy

Winter Love Island fans are already naming Shaughna Phillips as their favourite islander thanks to her relatability and witty one liners.

But she's received an outpouring of love from fans after they discovered the 25-year-old played an important role in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Shaugna's role in the council as a Democratic Services Officer saw her assisting the fire safety team following following the devastating blaze in June 2017, reports Capital .

In an interview before entering the Cape Town villa, she described the experience as "overwhelming".

She said: "To begin with, it was overwhelming, but because you’re doing something good, that if I went home and there was a few more fire safe doors that had been installed, it was like, ‘good, we’re getting there’."

"It was hitting the ground running as there was so much to do, so it was like a project and I loved, loved, loved it."

Despite being on a higher wage packet in her previous job, Shaughna explained that the buzz of helping people was what really gave her the plunge to take her current position in the council.

She said: "I know that’s cliché and embarrassing, but the job I was in before my previous one was more money, but I got a better feeling out of it."

But Shaughna make the tough decision to leave her job to appear on Love Island, flying to Cape Town for the launch of the new season.

As the islanders are paid an allowance throughout their time on the show from ITV, they are unable to take unpaid leave in their roles back at home.

She has however, admitted that she'd be more than happy to return to her job when her time in the villa ends.

She said: "My manager has said the door is open if I do want to go back, but said I won’t need to. I was like, ‘listen, I need that door open, I need that in writing.

In the future, Shaughna aspires to immerse herself further into the world of politics.

"I just like helping people and I want to do as much as I can. For me, it’s not really about how much a job pays you, because it’s about helping people."

Shaughna is currently single after twin Eve stole her original partner Callum in the first dramatic recoupling on Monday night.
