Friends defend Love Island's Paige Thorne after 'Mean Girls' moment

Some Love Island fans have criticised Paige Thorne's behaviour after she stopped Indiyah and Danica from joining a chat during last night's show (June 29). Last night's recoupling caused tension between some islanders, with Paige sitting down with Antigoni, Tasha, and Gemma to discuss Danica and Jay coupling up.

When Danica and Indiyah noticed the four girls chatting, the pair tried to join the conversation, before being stopped by Paige. The Welsh paramedic turned around and asked the duo: "Girlies, do you mind if we have just a little catch up and then we can have a catch up together afterwards - just us."

Danica said: "You four?" "Just us lot," replied Paige. "It isn't like that."

Danica and Indiyah then walked away to have their own private chat, whilst Antigoni grabbed Tasha and Paige's hands, telling them: "Loves you girls."

A number of fans were left 'rattled' by the interaction, with many taking to social media to express their discomfort. Amber Gill, who appeared on season five of Love Island, chipped in, saying: "Paige was a rude there #loveisland I hate fake nice"

Several viewers drew a similarity with the film Mean Girls and the famous 'you can't sit with us' scene. @dealwivitmils on Twitter commented that "she thinks she’s Regina George".

Ad6 wrote on Twitter: "The sigh before “girlies”, the grating condescending high pitch voice, tasha’s presence in general, antigoni holding their hands. Even Gemma was shocked, I’m RATTLED."

"You lot see a shocked expression from Gemma." Erica said. "But I see a 'this is awkward, what is she (Danica) doing here' expression directed straight at Antigoni. They all responded like what Paige said was 1)acceptable & 2)the supportive thing to do in that moment. Mean girls.

"Based on Gemma’s track record. Even if it did not involve her (amber vs Ekin). When she is against something she speaks out… but they ALL were & no one spoke to danica or indiyah after to apologise or to see if they were ok…"

Jewel said: "See, Indiyah is just too sweet. Do you know she didn’t make a deal out of it? she acted like nothing happened. I want her kind!"

"Imagine dealing the rejection of the dudes only to go talk to the girls and get this sort of reception?" Sasha said. "And antigoni loving it, it’s giving fake friends. At least Gemma was taken aback."

Amber Gill later added: "I'm shocked at Paige sorry maybe that's the true self there."

However, Despite a lot of viewers taking issue with Paige's behaviour, some fans have defended the 24-year-old from Swansea. Jordan Davies said: "The Paige hate on #LoveIsland is ridiculous.

"She’s the only one who didn’t want the girls to have a big confrontation. Tasha & Gemma would have sat back and watch the place burn down."

@James_Bagley56 tweeted: "She knew Antigoni didn’t want them over there so she didn’t want to make it awkward and so she said what she said. It would have been awkward either way."

@amber61783191 said: "Antigoni clearly needed a second to rant though before talking to Danica, Paige did the right thing imo in the nicest way she thought was possible at the time probably."

Paige's friends running her Instagram account have also revealed they have received "vile" abuse aimed at her in response to the episode, sharing a screen shot of a message from an Instagram user who went as far as wishing death upon her.

A message posted on her account's Instagram story today read: "Just a reminder you are watching an edited TV show. This is just a snippet of abuse being received over a situation I'm beyond baffled is even being spoken about." They have urged people once again to 'be kind'.
